In my role as Tent Designer for MSR my team partnered with the University of Washington’s Kristen Wind Tunnel to preform wind tunnel tests on prototype tents and final product tents. Our goal was to learn at what windspeed our tents would collapse. These tests provided hard data that provided excellent content for our product booklets and valuable innovations in tent design such as positioning guy loops lower on the tent to prevent the tent poles from bending at those points,

 

Wind tunnel testing is valuable for comparison and absolute measures of performance. But, I learned there is a big difference in wind tunnel testing and real-world performance. To name a few; gustiness, different angles of force, tent contents, flatness of tent site. I also learned at 15,000 feet elevation the air density is ½ of what it is at sea level. The wind load would be reduced to ½ at the same velocity.

The Wind 2 withstood sustained 106mph winds, it was the record at the time, but was beaten a couple of months later.

The Missing Link, Trekker Tent, Trekker Wing, and Twin Peaks withstood sustained 50 mph winds. I learned that straight pole tents and tents that use trekking pole are very wind resistant.
